30 years of the Cable Studies Centre (CECABLE)
The Cable Studies Centre (CECABLE) is celebrating its 30th anniversary in full swing and loaded with successes and awards. “It is exciting and a reason for happiness that CECABLE is reaching 30 years old,” explains Professor and Doctor Joan Francesc Fondevila Gascón, director of CECABLE.
CECABLE was born in 1995 as a research centre on cable and broadband, both from a technological and social perspective. Fondevila’s idea was pioneering, to the point that it won the Catalan Record that year. The awards and recognitions for Fondevila and CECABLE have multiplied since then. More activities soon followed, led by the Cable and Broadband Catalonia Congress (organised by CECABLE in collaboration with various universities, companies, institutions and the Generalitat de Catalunya), which reached its 25th edition in 2021 and are currently called DMTforum (co-organised by CECABLE and Feceminte in collaboration with the Societat Catalana de Comunicació-Institut d’Estudis Catalans, of which Fondevila is president), with 28 editions behind them. The 29th will take place in May 2025.
As for the creation of scientific articles, CECABLE, integrated into the Research Group on Digital Journalism and Broadband and the Research Group on Innovative Monetisation Systems in Journalism and Digital Marketing (SIMPED), of which Professor and Doctor Fondevila is the principal investigator, has accumulated more than two hundred indexed scientific articles, an international record. Books, book chapters and scientific communications are added to these merits.
The entity collaborates in initiatives such as the preparation of White Papers that establish public policies, the delivery of numerous conferences, philanthropic activities and a task of dissemination enthroned by the blog Telecomunicaciones y Periodismo, by the website and by social networks.
